How to Prepare for Your Junk Car to Get Towed Away

Each year, there are 25 million tons of material that are recycled from old cars. Selling your old car to a junking company is an easy way to make a little bit of money.

Are you preparing to sell your junk car? There are a few things that you need to do to prepare for towing your junk car. Make sure to follow these steps so you will be ready when that tow truck comes.

Take Out Your Belongings

The first step to take to prepare your junk car for towing is to take out each of your personal belongings. Once your car has been towed away, you will no longer have access to it.

If there is anything valuable in your car, you need to take it out before selling it. There are many places where car owners commonly forget to check. These include the glove compartment, center console, door pockets, and any other storage compartments.

You may also want to check under your floor mats and in between your seats for any belongings that may have gotten lost.

Gather Your Paperwork

First and foremost, you will need a state-issued ID in order to sell your vehicle. A driver’s license works fine as long as it is valid.

If you have the title to the car, in Florida this is a blue and white paper with a security watermark, you can sign it over to the junk car company. However, you will need to keep the top portion of your title as it serves as a receipt and has to be turned into the DMV.

If you don’t have the title, that’s okay as well. However, you must validate that you are the owner of the vehicle. The most common ways are the fact that you have the keys, and that the name on your ID matches the name of the registered owner. Also, if you do not have the title there are other qualifications necessary. The vehicle must be 10 years old or older, free of liens, and cannot be reported stolen. This information will be checked by running the VIN number across certain databases.

Remove License Plates

Before you get your car towed, you need to remove the license plates.  The license plate is your property, you paid for it when you registered your vehicle!  In Florida, you must surrender old license plates to the DMV after selling your vehicle or have the license plate transferred to another vehicle. Failure to do so can result in a suspended license.

If you leave your license plates on your car, you may end up with a suspended license and have to come out of pocket to replace the license plate.

Assess Your Vehicle

For the next step of junk car preparation, you need to assess your vehicle. This will help you understand the approximate value of your car before you sell it to a junking company.

You need to know what condition your car is in to get the best price. For example, is your car drivable? Is there serious damage to your car from an accident or a part malfunctioning?

A scrap company will need this information to accurately price your car. They may also include the price of other valuable items in your quote, like your battery or tires. Make sure you clarify what is included in the price before removing any of these items from your car.

Set Up an Appointment

Once you have found a company that you want to work with, you need to set up an appointment to get your car towed and to get paid. With All Car Buys, setting up an appointment is easy as we will work around your schedule and offer same day pick-up six days a week. Arranging for the removal of your junk car is a vital step, as you may get fined if you leave your car parked somewhere for too long.

If your car is no longer running, it isn’t a problem. Your car will be towed away, so you won’t have to worry about driving it somewhere in the first place. As long as you make the appointment, someone will come and take your car.

Cancel or Transfer Your Insurance

Finally, you need to cancel or transfer your car insurance. Once you have sold your car and have an appointment set to get it towed, you can call your insurance agency.

Then, you can ask them to cancel your insurance at the end of the day when your car is getting picked up. You have 30 days to surrender your license plates to the DMV once your insurance has been canceled, otherwise you run the risk of your license being suspended.

If you have already bought a new car, your insurance agency might be able to transfer your policy to your new car instead.
